How To Read and Understand Food Labels
Charles Gallagher, C.P., C.P.T.
Institute for Physical & Sports Therapy
Spokane, WA
In the local grocery stores, you can usually find many manufacturers of the same type of food, especially the boxed cereal isle where Kelloggs, Post and other brands are competing everyday with who has the healthiest, lowest in sugar cereal on the market. Unfortunately, many manufacturers have forgotten about the consumer and have led them down the deception isle.
The first thing to be aware of on a food label is the serving size. All the other specification like calories, fat, sodium, etc. are based on the serving size. OF course, you can get only 1-2 grams of fat in some products if the serving size is the size of a quarter. we know good and well that many of us will eat 3-4 times that amount and increase our fat to about 8-10 grams per serving.

Do men lose weight faster than women?

Question: Do men lose weight faster than women?
Answer: Yes, as unfair as it may seem, men do tend to lose weight faster than women. This can be upsetting, particularly when a man runs around the block a few times and seems to instantly lose 10 pounds while a woman's weight loss moves about as fast as a snail.
But, there are physiological reasons for that difference:
- Men have more muscle. This allows them to burn more calories, even when at rest.
- Women are predisposed to store and retain fat. Women have higher levels of estrogen, a hormone that works works to keep the fat on a woman's body so it's easier for her to get pregnant. That means women have to work harder to lose weight at the same rate as men.
- Men's bodies respond more quickly to exercise. Women's bodies, meanwhile, actually go into a sort of starvation mode, slowing the metabolism to hang onto more fat.
- Women may have a lower tolerance for exercise. Women have smaller lung capacity than men, which can make women feel as though they are working harder than men even if the women are working at the same level. This can also make exercise feel harder in the heat or high humidity.
This doesn't mean it's impossible for women to lose weight and, when you think about, excellent reasons are behind a woman's tendency to store fat. After all, creating and nurturing a new life is nothing to sneeze at.
It's always best to avoid comparing yourself to others, whether male or female, when it comes to weight loss. Everyone loses weight differently, and genes, along with hormones, play a large role in how quickly some people lose weight.

Metabolic Syndrome: Could You Have It?
Millions of Americans have a health condition that could increase their risk of developing 10 other serious medical problems, and they don’t even know it. The condition is called metabolic syndrome (also known as syndrome Xor insulin resistance syndrome), and it may affect as many as 47 million Americans.
The list of health problems that metabolic syndrome can lead to is long and concerning. It doubles a person's risk of both heart attack and stroke and also may lead to cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), fatty liver disease, cholesterol gallstones, asthma, and even some forms of cancer.
But here's the good news: Adding a brisk walk to your routine every day may be enough to help stop this syndrome -- and all of the accompanying health ills -- in its tracks.
Do You Have It?
Unfortunately, most of the symptoms of metabolic syndrome operate silently and are hardly noticeable from the outside. Finding out if you have the syndrome requires knowing several health measures obtained only through medical testing. Ask yourself the following questions to help determine whether a doctor's visit is in order:
· Are you overweight?

Do you drink water???

Do you drink water???
Your body is around 60% water, keeping it properly hydrated is essential for good health and optimum physical and mental performance. So how much should an individual drink per day?
The answer to that question is not as clear cut as it may seem, the most commonly quoted figures are 2 - 2.5 litres per day but as you will see there are many deciding factors that affect the "ideal" daily amount.
Why drink water?

Do you skip breakfast ?
Eating a nutritious breakfast is a great way to jump-start the day, yet a tasty breakfast might not be finding its way onto your kitchen table. Rushed morning routines, trying to lose weight, and lack of appetite early in the morning are all reasons people skip breakfast. Nevertheless, mounting evidence supports the idea that breakfast may indeed be the most important meal of the day.
Breakfast Benefits Studies examining eating habits suggest that the regular consumption of breakfast can:
Diet While You Sleep…Literally

People on a diet are given a mountain of advice:
