The Claim: Eat Six Small Meals a Day Instead of Three Big Ones

    THE FACTS

The notion behind eating smaller, more frequent meals is simple: spreading out one’s daily calories over six meals stimulates the metabolism, keeping it going at a faster pace and thereby burning more calories.

Some studies have found modest health benefits to eating smaller meals, but often the research involved extremes, like comparing the effects of two or three large daily meals with those of a dozen or more snacks. Six meals, according to some weight-loss books and fad diets, is a more realistic approach.

But don’t count on it. As long as total caloric and nutrient intake stays the same, then metabolism, at the end of the day, should stay the same as well. One study that carefully demonstrated this, published in 2009 in The British Journal of Nutrition, involved groups of overweight men and women who were randomly assigned to very strict low-calorie diets and followed for eight weeks. Each subject consumed the same number of calories per day, but one group took in three meals a day and the other six.

Both groups lost significant and equivalent amounts of weight. There was no difference between them in fat loss, appetite control or measurements of hormones that signal hunger and satiety. Other studies have had similar results.

For a more reliable metabolic boost, studies show, try exercise.

    THE BOTTOM LINE

There is no solid evidence that six small meals a day instead of three will speed metabolism.

1.6m Malaysian adults may have diabetes

1.6m Malaysian adults may have diabetes

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 11 — It is estimated that one out of eight Malaysians aged 30 years and above has diabetes, which amounts to over 1.6 million adults, based on the Third National Health and Morbidity Survey 2006.

Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said the prevalence of diabetes also showed a drastic increase of 80 per cent over a period of just 10 years, from 8.3 per cent in 1996 to 14.9 per cent in 2006 for the same age group.

Even more worrying, he said, was that one third of those who had diabetes were undiagnosed and also not aware of their condition.

This was very dangerous because if not detected early they would face serious complications like stroke, amputations, blindness, heart disease and kidney failure, he told reporters after launching the fourth edition of the Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) for the Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, at the Putrajaya Hospital here today.

Dr Mohd Ismail urged those 30 years and above to undergo screening to ensure that they do not have the disease, and if they do, to start on the medication to avoid worse complications.

He also urged those bodies involved in diabetes such as the National Diabetes Institute (Nadi), Malaysian Diabetes Association (PDM) and Malaysian Endocrine and Metabolic Society (MEMS) to work together to create awareness among the people about the disease.

on the guidelines, he said they were developed to provide a clear and concise approach to all health care providers on the current practice in the management of such type of diabetes. – Bernama

Obese Girls With Greater Ratio of Visceral Fat Have Lower Bone Density

"Obese Girls With Greater Ratio of Visceral Fat Have Lower Bone Density"

CHEVY CHASE, Md -- March 3, 2010 -- According to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the [
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, obese teenage girls with a greater ratio of visceral fat to subcutaneous fat are likely to have lower bone density than peers with a lower ratio of visceral to subcutaneous fat.

"Visceral fat is known to increase the risk of diabetes and heart disease in obese people," said senior author Madhusmita Misra, MD, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts.

"Our study suggests that visceral fat may also have an impact on bone health. This finding is particularly relevant given the rising prevalence of obesity and recent studies suggesting a higher risk of fractures in some obese individuals."

In the study, Dr. Misra and colleagues examined 30 adolescent girls (15 obese/15 normal weight) between the ages of 12 and 18 years. After measuring weight and height, researchers used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure subcutaneous and visceral fat tissue and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to assess bone density at the spine, hip and whole body.

They found that subcutaneous fat and visceral fat had reciprocal associations with bone density measures, with subcutaneous fat demonstrating positive associations and visceral fat demonstrating inverse associations.

"We do not yet fully understand the chemical mediators of the associations between regional fat and bone health," said Dr. Misra.

"It is possible that inflammatory cytokines, types of signaling molecules used in cellular communication, or hormones like adiponectin or leptin are potential mediators of these associations between fat and bone, but further studies are needed to determine their true impact on bone metabolism."

    10 Health Benefits of Eggs
    Health Benefits of Eggs

    1. Eggs are great for the eyes. According to one study, an egg a day may prevent
macular degeneraton due to the carotenoid content, specifically lutein and zeaxanthin. Both nutrients are more readily available to our bodies from eggs than from other sources.

    2. In another study, researchers found that people who eat eggs every day lower their risk of developing cataracts, also because of the lutein and zeaxanthin in eggs.

    3. One egg contains 6 grams of high-quality protein and all
    9 essential amino acids

Artificial Sweeteners Could Be Sabotaging Your Diet

Published on UltraWellness - Your Key to Lifelong Health and Vitality (http://www.ultrawellness.com)

Artificial Sweeteners Could Be Sabotaging Your Diet
    There’s no doubt about it.

    Artificial sweeteners cause obesity.

I always thought it was funny to see a very large person order a Big Mac, large fries -- and top it off with a Diet Coke. I also found it peculiar that I rarely saw thin people drinking diet sodas. So I began to wonder if there could be a link between diet beverages or artificial sweeteners and obesity.

As I began to explore this notion, I discovered a number of different research findings that pointed to this very phenomenon.

First, our current obesity epidemic has coincided perfectly with the introduction of large amounts of artificial sweeteners into our food supply. Although we cannot say for sure that this means artificial sweeteners cause obesity, it certainly makes me wonder.

    Egg Yolk, anyone?

    The Incredible, Edible Egg Yolk

    July, 2005
    by Chris Masterjohn
Egg yolks? But they're full of cholesterol!
I'm sure you've heard it before. When you think of a "health freak," you don't think of someone eating egg yolks and discarding the white.
    Think again.

    Egg Nutrition: Yolk vs. White

Egg yolks are indeed full of cholesterol. Like most cholesterol-rich foods, they are jam-packed full of important nutrients, especially the fat-soluble vitamins and essential fatty acids.
In fact, the slew of nutrients in an egg yolk is so comprehensive that a few a day would offer better insurance than a multi-vitamin. Most importantly, the yolk contains most of the nutrients in an egg.
Egg whites, on the other hand, contain far fewer nutrients. The only thing that could justify their consumption is their attachment to their companion yolk.

Don't believe it? Below is a table that compares the nutritional value of egg whites and yolks, with data provided by the USDA. I've included additional analysis in the last two columns that provides the percentage of the total nutrition found in the yolk and the percentage of total nutrition found in the white.

    Why we binge eat

knowing why is more than half the battle
Overeating and emotional eating is just   another sign that you are in fact human.
Knowing why is more than half the battle
You’ll see a lot of articles about how to fight the occasional eat-fest, in fact I dare you to find one woman’s or man’s magazine near the holidays and at the beginning of summer that doesn’t address this issue.
In these magazines, and even on weight loss forums all over the net, you’ll see suggestions with how to beat it: eat this food, don’t eat that food. Go for a walk, take a bath. But let’s be honest, if these things worked, we’d all be prunes from taking all of those bubble baths and ben and jerry’s would be out of business….well, okay, they’d have to at least sell the summer home in Buenos Aires.
So here’s some more practical advice on discovering your reasons for binging and how to heal from them:

Seremban 2 HP student - progress result

Ms Sharon Wong had tried a weight management programme before. It worked at first but her weight rebounded and she felt tired when she was on the previous programme.

She was introduced to HP by her MBA colleague in September 2009. After the Healthpointe programme was explained to her, she liked the that the program could prevent weight rebound as well as having lots of energy. She decided to start the programme on 1st October 2009. At that time her weight was 86.4kg, body fat was 38.3%, Her visceral fat was at level 11, a level which was considered at risk.

After going through two cycles, her weight is now 74.5kg, body fat 33.2%, visceral fat is down to level 6, which is within the safe limit. (the ideal visceral fat is level 1 to 9).

    Penang get energised
